Fermented Food to Eat or Not ?

To eat or not?

Yes, eat!

This is a common concern with many people for fermented food because many complain about bloating, gas and acidity. Hence, they feel it is to be avoided.

Let’s get the clarity

What is fermentation?

It is a process that involves the breakdown of carbs by bacteria and yeast. It results in a distinct flavor of particular food.

Is fermented food healthy?

Yes, fermented food is healthy and it has a positive impact on GUT health, digestive system, immune system, improves Vitamin B12 and good news, it aids in weight loss.

Fermented food also boosts nutrient availability of food (i.e. make curd rice and keep it for 3-4 hours. It will ferment and give you a good dose of Vitamin B12, energy and GUT bacteria). It is rich in probiotics.

In the Indian context, which foods are fermented?

Yogurt (Dahi), Pickles (achaar), rice-based dishes such as dhokla, idli, dosa, handvo, buttermilk. These foods enhance the nutrient value, therapy for many illnesses & disorders and are tasty.

Then, why do I feel gassy, bloated or acidic after eating fermented food?

Wrong timing – i.e. eating dhokla or dosa in the night for dinner (acidic or bloated)

Over fermentation – i.e. your dhokla batter was more than 48 hours old (acidic or bloated)

Not wholesome – i.e. you ate your dhokla without any chatni or oil/ghee with it. (gas)

Big quantity – i.e. pickles are meant to be eaten in small quantities as a complement to main meals, rather than in large quantities like vegetable or dal (acidic)
